This book relates the inspiring stories of over thirty famous writers rejected by publishers at some point in their careers. Their accounts offer encouragement to anyone who thinks about writing for publication. A rebuffed manuscript that later goes on to achieve fame and success underscores the value of confidence and perseverance. Agatha Christie's first novel received some half dozen rejections and waited four years to emerge from the press. Charlotte Bronte's first novel never appeared in her lifetime. Uncle Tom's Cabin was deemed too controversial. Shaw was not interesting enough. Sherlock Holmes, first created in A Study in Scarlet, was unwanted. This book tells the fascinating stories of great authors who overcame the rejections of benighted publishers fortunately for English literature.
"It hurts to be beautiful" has been a cliche for centuries. What has been far less appreciated is how much it hurts not to be beautiful. The Beauty Bias explores our cultural preoccupation with attractiveness, the costs it imposes, and the responses it demands. Beauty may be only skin deep, but the damages associated with its absence go much deeper. Unattractive individuals are less likely to be hired and promoted, and are assumed less likely to have desirable traits, such as goodness, kindness, and honesty. Three quarters of women consider appearance important to their self image and over a third rank it as the most important factor. Although appearance can be a significant source of pleasure, its price can also be excessive, not only in time and money, but also in physical and psychological health. Our annual global investment in appearance totals close to $200 billion. Many individuals experience stigma, discrimination, and related difficulties, such as eating disorders, depression, and risky dieting and cosmetic procedures.Women bear a vastly disproportionate share of these costs, in part because they face standards more exacting than those for men, and pay greater penalties for falling short. The Beauty Bias explores the social, biological, market, and media forces that have contributed to appearance-related problems, as well as feminism's difficulties in confronting them. The book also reviews why it matters. Appearance-related bias infringes fundamental rights, compromises merit principles, reinforces debilitating stereotypes, and compounds the disadvantages of race, class, and gender. Yet only one state and a half dozen localities explicitly prohibit such discrimination. The Beauty Bias provides the first systematic survey of how appearance laws work in practice, and a compelling argument for extending their reach. The book offers case histories of invidious discrimination and a plausible legal and political strategy for addressing them. Our prejudices run deep, but we can do far more to promote realist

Gleeful and noisy celebrations greeted several dozen nervous young women when, after 99 tumultuous days at sea aboard the Tynemouth, they stepped ashore in Victoria in September 1862. Immediately they were faced with an ordeal of a different kind -- walking in single file up the ceremonial pathway through a jostling crowd of boisterous, eager men. One astonished young woman, proposed to on the spot, accepted her suitor to the delighted cheers of the throng and married him the next day. However, it took most of the bride-ship women longer to find their new destinies. Why did these women leave everything behind in England and come to the west coast of Canada? The answers lie in the atrocious disruptions of industrial Britain, the conflicting aims of earnest Christians and early feminists, and the lusty turmoil of a gold-rush frontier. All three elements shaped this complex and intriguing true story. The hardships and happiness of Louisa and Charlotte Townsend, Isabel Curtis, Jane Saunders, Emma Tammadge, Minnie Gillan and others who left no records are brought to life in this book.

In this well-researched and fascinating book, noted journalist Thomas de Waal--author of the highly acclaimed Black Garden--makes the case that while the Caucasus is often treated as a sub-plot in the history of Russia, or as a mere gateway to Asia, the five-day war in Georgia, which flared into a major international crisis in 2008, proves that this is still a combustible region, whose inner dynamics and history deserve a much more complex appreciation from the wider world. In The Caucasus, de Waal provides this richer, deeper, and much-needed appreciation, one that reveals that the South Caucasus--Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia, and their many smaller regions, enclaves, and breakaway entities--is a fascinating and distinct world unto itself. Providing both historical background and an insightful analysis of the period after 1991, de Waal sheds light on how the region has been scarred by the tumultuous scramble for independence and the three major conflicts that broke out with the end of the Soviet Union--Nagorny Karabakh, Abkhazia, and South Ossetia. The book examines the region as a major energy producer and exporter; offers a compelling account of the Rose Revolution in Georgia, the rise of Mikheil Saakashvili, and the August 2008 war; and considers the failure of the South Caucasus, thus far, to become a single viable region. In addition, the book features a dozen or so "boxes" which provide brief snapshots of such fascinating side topics as the Kurds, Turkish-Armenian rapprochement, the promotion of the region as the "Soviet Florida," and the most famous of all Georgians, Stalin. The Caucasus delivers a vibrantly written and timely account of this turbulent region, one that will prove indispensable for all concerned with world politics. It is, as well, a stimulating read for armchair travellers and for anyone curious about far-flung corners of the world.

You are about to read a book like no other. Bloody Jack is a collection about the making and unmaking of story, of poetry and of history. Based loosely on the life of John Krafchenko, a notorious Manitoban outlaw, the poems of Bloody Jack turn fact and fiction upside down and inside out. Dennis Cooley has added more than a dozen new poems to this revised edition and Douglas Barbour has written an introduction. By turns earthy and earnest, soulful and sly, Bloody Jack is a rollicking, fun-filled riot of a volume by one of Canada's favourite poets.

The Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) subsidises meals and snacks served by child care centres and day care homes; in centres, higher subsidies are given for meals/snacks served to lower-income children, while subsidies for homes generally are not varied by children's family income (but are larger for homes in lower-income areas or operated by lower-income providers). Schools, RCCIs, and other public and private non-profit organisations operating programs for children also can receive subsidies for snacks (and, in some cases, meals) served in after-school and other outside-of-school settings. The Summer Food Service Program subsidises food service operations by public and private non-profit sponsors in lower-income areas during the summer; all meals/snacks they serve are subsidised, generally without regard to individual children's family income. The Special Milk Program operates in schools and RCCIs without a lunch program and subsidises all milk they serve. All these subsidies are inflation-indexed and are paid only where the subsidised meals/snacks meet federal nutrition standards. In addition to cash aid, many providers receive food commodities from the Agriculture Department, at a set value per meal (and may receive 'bonus' commodities from stocks acquired for agricultural support purposes).
