There are few dates in history that stand out so clearly as a turning point for mankind as 11 September 2001. The terrorist attacks produced an earthshaking impact on world affairs which resulted in a radical disruption of international order. Although deeply significant, September 11 nevertheless represented only one chapter in the story of the great conflict of our time: the confrontation between the global village and the small village, between the forces of uniformity and of diversity, between the homogenising trends that seek to subdue everything that lies in their path and the currents of thought that value local identities, particularities and traditions. In 'The Age of Villages', Venezuelan scholar and diplomat Alfredo Toro-Hardy sets out to explore the era of globalisation, in which we all - or better or for worse - live in.He provides ample evidence of the transfer of national sovereignty upwards to regional or supra-national bodies; of the growth of giant companies whose operations straddle the globe and whose senior management are citizens of the world; of the migrations from state to state and continent to continent that are leading to the globalisation of the labour market for skilled workers such as software engineers and the clamour for greater freedom of movement for the less skilled. However, Toro-Hardy recognises the different reactions to globalisation in different parts of the world. He draws our attention to the appeal of right-wing politicians in Europe; to the rise of Islamic fundamentalism; and to the psychological needs of so many for a local identity. Toro-Hardy provides a entirely original, timely, and necessary understanding of the forces that are shaping our world. He offers a global, regional, national, and sub-national analysis of the nature of the great confrontation that grips the world today and its alarming ramifications.
Kunsang thought she would never leave Tibet. One of Tibet's youngest nuns, she grew up in a remote mountain village where, as a teenager, she entered the local nunnery. Though simple, Kunsang's life gave her all she needed: a oneness with nature, a sense of the spiritual in all things. She married a monk, had two children and lived in peace.
'This is the sort of book that many of us would like to have written.' - Richard Waller in The Journal of African History 'Africa is so difficult for the outsider to understand, so easy to oversimplify or misinterpret. If more of it were revealed through the revealing and highly readable technique of this book, the world would have a far clearer picture of why Africa is the way it is.' - Richard Dowden in The Independent '...one of the most refreshing and important works of East African history for many years... 'The beauty of the book is the way in which it shows how the landscape of Siaya, in western Kenya, near the Lake, is simultaneously fixed by Nature in that place, yet is carried as a frame of reference in the minds and hopes of the migrants who flow to the compounds of the cities. Their chapter entitled "Forms in the Siaya Landscape" is a vital new element in the debate about migration: "The presumption that migrations reveal a social topography of broken relations deserves challenge (p.17)". It leads naturally to a discussion about the construction of boundaries which are in both space and time (through invented history) - and to the multiple forms that the landscape of Siaya takes in the minds of people of Siaya, whether at home or away. Home is where the placenta is buried. As for Martin Luther, it is ein feste Burg (in Luo gunda bur - the ancient fortified village site), both visible and invisible. It is all music to this reviewer's ears.' - Gwyn Prins in African Affairs
From its first magnificent sentence, "In our family, there was no clear line between religion and fly fishing", to the last, "I am haunted by waters", A River Runs Through It is an American classic. Based on Norman Maclean's childhood experiences, A River Runs Through It has established itself as one of the most moving stories of our time; it captivates readers with vivid descriptions of life along Montana's Big Blackfoot River and its near magical blend of fly fishing with the troubling affections of the heart. This handsome edition is designed and illustrated by Barry Moser. There are thirteen two-color wood engravings. "A masterpiece...This is more than stunning fiction: It is a lyric record of a time and a life, shining with Maclean's special gift for calling the reader's attention to arts of all kinds--the arts that work in nature, in personality, in social intercourse, in fly-fishing."--Kenneth M. Pierce, Village Voice Norman Maclean (1902-90), woodsman, scholar, teacher, and storyteller, grew up in the Western Rocky Mountains of Montana and worked for many years in logging camps and for the United States Forestry Service before beginning his academic career. He retired from the University of Chicago in 1973.
In 1916, Berenger Sauniere, the enigmatic priest of the French village of Rennes-le-Chateau, created his ultimate clue: he went to great expense to create a model of a region said to be the Calvary Mount, indicating the 'Tomb of Jesus'. But the region on the model does not resemble the actual lay-out of Jerusalem. Did Sauniere leave a clue as to the true location of his treasure? And what is that treasure? After years of research, Andre Douzet discovered this model, never collected from the model maker by Sauniere, who had died just before the model's completion. Backed by evidence showing correspondence between Sauniere and the model maker, Douzet also reveals much new evidence, including the revelation that Sauniere spent large amounts of time and money in the city of Lyons, often on exotic and high tech photographic instruments. And for the first time, it is shown Sauniere met some very interesting people from esoteric, in particular Martinist, circles in Lyons. This body of evidence for the first time demonstrates there is indeed a true mystery surrounding this village priest -- a theory widely speculated on so far by others authors, but seldom if ever backed by evidence. The model is the only real clue Sauniere left behind as to the nature and location of his treasure -- and is unveiled in this book, which includes pictures and detailed drawings of the model, among many other things. It also reveals the location of the region where Sauniere had located his treasure...and where Douzet himself has so far recovered large quantities of precious and semi-precious materials. Above all, Douzet demonstrates that grounds of Perillos not so much hold a 'treasure' (though present), but rather a 'secret', and that this secret was the true importance of Sauniere's mystery; a secret that is said to be of vital importance -- and terrifying force.
For Huastecan Nahuas, water is a symbolic reference. This book describes the multiple values attached to water through the practice of tale telling in this society. It analyzes several local tales about water manifestations such as floodings, thunderstorms, and waterlords, and explores what these mean to Huastecan Nahuas in their present socio-cultural context. The author shows how tales about this element represent and discuss current themes like the village's right to exist, social cohesion among villagers, the need to show respect towards nature, and life and death. The book reveals how the study of tale telling provides a promising angle to address and better understand today's indigenous cultures in Mexico.
Three main fields have shaped current scholarship on Eastern Europe's communist past: institutional, especially debates concerning the characteristics of the regime; questions on resistance and opposition; and social, cultural, and everyday history. There is a particular urgency in approaching the social and cultural aspects of everyday life under the formula of "remembering communism." Remembering exemplifies a dynamic process that continually reassesses the communist experience. By favoring the term "remembering" over "memory," this book chooses a lived experience that is inflected by the exigencies of the present moment.Dedicated to mediums of remembering (or genres of representation), this collection makes explicit the complex nature of the process. The first section traces different explanatory modes and models following the collapse of "real socialism." The second section on oral history relies on extensive fieldwork at different sites and among diverse groups, including factory workers, village inhabitants, and political emigres. Subsequent sections provide a concrete glimpse into reassessments of the period, turning to archives, memoirs, and textbooks. The final section handles visual material: fashion magazines, cinema, and monuments. Drawing on examples from Bulgaria, Croatia, Germany, Hungary, Lithuania, Russia, Serbia, Slovenia, and Ukraine, Remembering Communism responds to, or rather apprehends the peculiarities of transforming an "objective" reality into a subjective one.
Conrad Phillip Kottak (A.B. Columbia College 1963; Ph.D. Columbia University, 1966) is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Anthropology at the University of Michigan, where he has taught since 1968. In 1991 he was honored for his teaching by the University and state of Michigan. In 1992 he received an excellence in teaching award from the College of Literature, Sciences, and the Arts of the University of Michigan. And in 1999 the American Anthropological Association (AAA) awarded Professor Kottak the AAA/Mayfield Award for Excellence in the Undergraduate Teaching of Anthropology. Professor Kottak has done ethnographic field work in Brazil (since 1962), Madagascar (since 1966), and the United States. His general interests are in the processes by which local cultures are incorporated--and resist incorporation--into larger systems. This interest links his earlier work on ecology and state formation in Africa and Madagascar to his more recent research on global change, national and international culture, and the mass media. The third edition of Kottak's popular case study Assault on Paradise: Social Change in a Brazilian Village, based on his field work in Arembepe, Bahia, Brazil, was published in 1999 by McGraw-Hill. In a research project during the 1980s, Kottak blended ethnography and survey research in studying "Television's Behavioral Effects in Brazil." That research is the basis of Kottak's book Prime-Time Society: An Anthropological Analysis of Television and Culture (Wadsworth 1990)--a comparative study of the nature and impact of television in Brazil and the United States. Kottak's other books include The Past in the Present: History, Ecology and Cultural Variation in Highland Madagascar (1980), Researching American Culture: A Guide for Student Anthropologists (1982) (both University of Michigan Press) and Madagascar: Society and History (1986) (Carolina Academic Press). The most recent editions (tenth) of his texts Anthropology: The Exploration of Human Diversity and Cultural Ant
K is the unwanted Land Surveyor who is never to be admitted to the Castle nor accepted in the village. As he encounters dualities of certainty and doubt, hope and fear, and reason and nonsense, K's struggles in the absurd, labyrinthine world where he finds himself seem to reveal a truth about the nature of existence. This work presents his story.
In Working with the Curlew Trevor Robinson shares his enthusiasm and joy for his work as a shepherd on the moor at Great Whernside in Yorkshire and later as a farmhand near Leominster in Hereford: "e;A lovely environment, very busy and hard work with no lorries, no electric motors, no tractors-just nature's own sounds."e; He celebrates the intricate details of traditional farm life: selling rabbits at tuppence each, the village hop, sheep shearing, lambing, shire horses, haymaking, the warm welcome taste of tea on a snow-bound moor, muck spreading, cheese and bread making, and trout-tickling. During one severe Yorkshire winter six hundred sheep were lost, and he had to leave the job he loved - 'the call of the curlew was still over two months away, when it came I was not there to hear it'. His new job in Herefordshire brought different skills: hedge laying, ploughing matches, haymaking, chain harrowing and crop rotation, and inevitably, the arrival of tractor and combine harvester. Working with the Curlew is an intimate and evocative account of an era before factory farming, when farmers worked closely with nature and the rhythm of the seasons, a smallholding could sustain a family, and there were enough small farms for a shepherd to climb the ladder to ownership.

The Residence is a panoramic residence upon the green hills overlooking Lake Maggiore. It’s a family friendly place for everybody who loves relaxing in the surroundings of nature with an exceptional view on the lake. A nice swimming pool and solarium are available to the guests and children. The panoramic apartment has two very spacious terrace with stunning lake view, outdoor table, deck chairs. This hillside residence is constructed on a number of levels with a glass elevator offering great views over the lake while you are carried to and from your floor. However, the elevator has been known to occasionally malfunction so be prepared to walk up a few stairs in the event of this happening! For this reason, we recommend that the residence is not suited for people with walking difficulties. The residence is situated nearby the small village of Oggebbio and the charming town Cannero Riviera with many shops, bars and restaurants. From here you can hop on a boat and explore the beautiful lake, its beaches, islands and surroundings in Italy and Switzerland. Many watersport acitivities are offered nearby as well as great opportunities for mountain biking or trekking in the nearby mountain valleys.Note:The residence is situated on a hill accessible by a narrow and winding road. Please note that it’s not so easy reachable driving up there the first few times, the resultant magnificent view over Lake Maggiore more than makes up for the high climb. It’s located almost 2 km from the lake and from the nearest facilities (supermarket, restaurants,…) so a car is necessary.
For ages 4-8. In this contemporary tale, Jason discovers the return of the sea otter to his West Coast village. One day, while fishing in his dugout canoe, Jason sees a dark furry head with black eyes and a grey whiskery muzzle bobbing among the weeds. Fascinated, he spends many hours with his canoe tied to the kelp bed, watching the sea otter. One day Jason leans too far over in his canoe and falls into the water. The canoe has come loose from where he tied it and, and a strong current is carrying it away from him. But something prevents the canoe from drifting away. In an entertaining way, the book teaches children the importance of learning about and being in nature, and the respect that nature's wild creatures deserve. Paul Montpellier's full-colour illustrations have been described as "wonderfully clear and detailed, capturing both closeness to nature and a sense of continuity of native tradition.".

In 1863 Claude Monet and Frederic Bazille left Paris for Barbizon, a small village on the edge of the Forest of Fontainebleau, forty miles south-west of Paris. They came to this district to paint from nature in the open air and to make studies for landscape paintings, far from the pressures of city life. Together with Renoir and Sisley, they were following a well-trodden path taken by painters and tourists some thirty years earlier. Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot had been studying the fleeting effe
