When the British prototype Concorde took off from RAF Fairford on 9 April 1969, at the controls was Captain Brian Trubshaw. This title presents the story of Brian Trubshaw's life as an experimental test pilot, written from his own unique viewpoint on the flight deck, and covering a period of tremendous upheaval.
Elements of aviation acousticsQuieting cabin and flight deck noise, and reducing the impact of noise oncommununities near airports are matters of great importance toair-manufacturers and airline operators for already more than four decades.Undoubtedly, knowledge of both aeronautics and acoustics is essential fora clear understanding of any aviation noise problem. Such understandmg isa necessary prerequisite to the control of interior and exterior noise. In view of the importance of education in dealing with noise control, thisbook is devoted to the branch of aerospace engineering known as aviationacoustics. The book contains twelve chapters and three appendixes whichoriginate from an annual course on airplane noise given by the author toaerospace engineering students at Delft University of Technology (DUI).The book is intended to be useful to undergraduate students of aerospaceengineering, and also to researchers and practicing engineers who wish torevive their understanding of the topic. The text assumes litde or no previous knowledge of acoustics.ContentsPreface • 1. Basic facts • 2. Dynamics of sound waves • 3. Elementarysources • 4. Propagation of sound in the atmosphere • 5. Aircraft Design explores fixed winged aircraft design at the conceptual phase of a project. Designing an aircraft is a complex multifaceted process embracing many technical challenges in a multidisciplinary environment. By definition, the topic requires intelligent use of aerodynamic knowledge to configure aircraft geometry suited specifically to the customer's demands. It involves estimating aircraft weight and drag and computing the available thrust from the engine. The methodology shown here includes formal sizing of the aircraft, engine matching, and substantiating performance to comply with the customer's demands and government regulatory standards. Associated topics include safety issues, environmental issues, material choice, structural layout, understanding flight deck, avionics, and systems (for both civilian and military aircraft). Cost estimation and manufacturing considerations are also discussed. The chapters are arranged to optimize understanding of industrial approaches to aircraft design methodology. Example exercises from the author's industrial experience dealing with a typical aircraft design are included.
This riveting account reveals the secret corners of our supposedly flat world: black markets where governments are never seen but still spend outrageous amounts of money. Journalist Matt Potter tells the story of Yuri and his crew, a gang of Russian military men who, after the collapse of the Soviet Union found themselves without work or prospects. So they bought a decommissioned Soviet plane-at liquidation prices, straight from the Russian government-and started a shipping business. It wasn't long before Yuri, and many pilots like him, found themselves an unlikely (and ethically dubious) hub of global trading. Men like these are paid by the U.S., the Taliban, and blue-chip multinational companies to bring supplies- some legal, some not-across dangerous borders. In a feat of daring reportage, Potter gets onto the flight deck with these outlaws and tells the story of their fearless missions. Dodging gunfire, Potter is taken from place to place by men trafficking everything from illicit weapons to emergency aid, making enemies everywhere but no reliable friends. As the world changes, we see the options for the crew first explode, then slowly diminish, until, in a desperate maneuver, they move their operations to the most lawless corners of Africa, where they operate to this day. The story of these outlaws is a microcosm of the world since the end of the cold war: secret contracts, guerrilla foreign policy, and conflicts too thorny to be handled in public. Potter uses the story of these men to articulate an underground history of the globalized world. At once thrilling, provocative, and morally circumspect, this book is a must-read for anyone with an interest in espionage, or in how the world works today.
Taking an integrated, systems approach to human performance issues on the flight deck of the modern airliner, this book describes the inter-relationships between the various application areas of human factors, recognising that the human contribution to the operation of an airliner does not fall into neat pigeonholes. The relationship between areas such as pilot selection, training, flight deck design and safety management is continually emphasised. It also affirms the upside of human factors in aviation and avoids placing undue emphasis on when the human component fails.
