The Dutch percussionist Han Bennink is a jazz rarity: he's as comfortable with Dixieland and bebop as he is with free jazz. Bennink has played on Eric Dolphy's LAST DATE album and in contexts as diverse as Lee Konitz, Derek Bailey and Cecil Taylor. He has a strong, certain feel for swing, but can interact with instrumentalists in a heartbeat: his anarchistic live performance style falls somewhere between Ed Blackwell and the Three Stooges' Curly Howard. The confounding and exhilarating NERVE BEATS is a rare European Bennink album from 1973.Here Bennink plays drums and percussion, as well as clarinet, trombone, electronics, and anything else within easy reach, one or two or more at a time. At times NERVE BEATS seems a good-humored, zany free-for-all, but, upon careful listening, structure, both implicit and explicit, appears. Percussive explorations give way to trance-like minimalist textures and rainforest evocations, with Bennink subtly layering melodic motifs, rhythm, and noise. What makes this challenging music such a joy is Bennink's madly mischievous yet amiable sense of humor, and his utter refusal to take either himself or his performance seriously. Han Bennink makes free jazz that's fun.

You certainly can't call Chris Spedding's 2005 release, Click Clack, a true blues album. While the respected session guitarist's roots certainly lay in blues-rock, the production is too pristine and the performances too perfect to be classified as blues. But if your forte is mature, mainstream rock with a slight bluesy edge (à la Eric Clapton's latter-day work), then Click Clack will be right up your alley. Even at his most upbeat, Spedding manages to keep everything extremely laid-back -- the tempos, the licks, even his Mark Knopfler-like vocals. The album's title comes from an old Captain Beefheart track, which Spedding covers here (and which turns out to be one of the album's highlights), while two other instrumental covers prove to be highlights -- the jazzy 'Ramblin'' (by Ornette Coleman) and the album closer, 'Last Date' (by Floyd Cramer). But not all of Click Clack consists of covers, as evidenced by such Spedding originals as the album opener, 'Hilife' (which sounds comparable to a song you'd hear while waiting on the phone for your computer's tech support), 'Hear Your Daddy,' and 'How to Get Rid of the Blues.' He'll probably forever be best known for playing with others, but Spedding has his own voice, as evidenced by Click Clack. ~ Greg Prato
Although it isn't necessarily a definitive retrospective, Essential is the best CD compilation of Floyd Cramer's solo recordings yet assembled. Containing 20 tracks, including his hits 'Last Date,' 'San Antonio Rose' and 'Stood Up,' the disc captures Cramer's signature stride piano style in all of its glory on a variety of country, pop and R&B numbers. Cramer was as well-known as a sideman as he was a solo artist, and even if Essential contains none of his session work, it contains a good portion of his very best recordings, making it a fine introduction to one of the most influential pianists in country and pop history. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
After parting ways with the Lovin' Spoonful in 1967, co-founder Zalman Yanovsky -- better known to fans and friends simply as 'Zally' -- surfaced the following year on his lone solo long-player Alive and Well in Argentina (1968). The effort returned the artist back to the early rock as well as country & western roots that had inspired him. Plus, he was able to modernize, if not counter the weepy and introspective direction the Spoonful was continually drifting toward as John Sebastian scored the easier listening 'Darling Be Home Soon' and 'Younger Generation.' Bearing his trademark sense of humor -- and help from none other than Jerry Yester -- his replacement in the Spoonful -- and former bandmate Joe Butler (drums), the platter has the feel of a Lovin' Spoonful side project. The opening rave-up 'Raven in a Cage' is preceded by a surreal composite of farmyard audio effects and 'Oh, Canada!' -- the Canadian National Anthem. The song's heavier execution instantly recalls the Spoonful's 'There She Is' and '4 Eyes' with just a hint of Yanovsky's jug band roots and overtones. With electric guitars wailing, the lethargic and definitely sardonic update of one-hit wonder Joe Jones' 1960 'You Talk Too Much' is Yanovsky at his irreverent best. Yet he manages to turn it into a commendable performance before the bottom literally falls out of the groove. Continuing with the trip down memory lane are impressive interpretations of the Floyd Cramer instrumental 'Last Date' as well as the Bobby Day-penned 'Little Bitty Pretty One' -- a hit for Thurston Harris in 1957. Yanovsky's impassioned and slightly out of tune vocal plea inoculates it with a shot of soul, while the thoroughly echoplexed chorus has a gritty lo-fi feel. The banjo-fralin' title track 'Alive and Well in Argentina' adopts a rural flavor and melody comparable to Dave Dudley's 18-wheeler ode 'Six Days on the Road.' The lyrics demonstrate the artist's tweaked funny bone, not to mention a not-so-subtle reply to the question that Spoonful fans and reporters were asking in the wake of Zally's departure. The 1971 reissue of the LP on Kama Sutra added the single 'As Long as You're Here' -- which was written by the team of Garry Bonner and Alan Gordon who are perhaps best-known for the Turtles' hits 'Happy Together,' 'She's My Girl,' and 'Cat in the Window.' In due time they would also provide the Joe Butler-led incarnation of the Lovin' Spoonful '('Till I) Run with You' and 'Amazing Air' on their Revelation Revolution '69 collection. Equaling if not surpassing the earlier covers are Yanovsky's raw reading of George Jones' divorce ode 'Brown to Blue' and a honky tonkin' take of Ivory Joe Hunter's 'I Almost Lost My Mind.' The upbeat poppish spin of John Sebastian's 'Priscilla Millionaira' comes on the heels of the Lovin' Spoonful's version from Everything Playing. An attempt at full-blown (or, perhaps more accurately overblown) psychedelia is heard on the pseudo-heavy 'Hip Toad.' It stands in contrast to the overt mixture of trippy electric guitars and orchestrated jamming titled 'Lt. Schtinkckhausen' -- ultimately sounding more like Frank Zappa than the Spoonful. The colorful jacket artwork collage is credited to Peter Max, while the dimestore novel-esque liner notes are courtesy of Carl Gottlieb -- a writer for the Smothers Brothers TV Show among numerous other credits. ~ Lindsay Planer

*In A World by Itself, six distinguished British historians offer the most definitive and compelling history of the British Isles to date. *Tracing the political, religious and material cultures from the Romans to the present day, it is at once an urgent reassessment of our shared past, and an inspirational celebration of British history. *It focuses on the major themes and most dramatic moments of the last two millenia, from the Romans to reformation, revolution to restoration, wars both civil and global, and the enduring question of what it means to be 'British'. History, like the present, is always changing, and scholarship on the history of the British Isles is currently experiencing a golden age. The breakdown of modernism, the eclipse of the Marxist tradition and of the 'Whig interpretation' that sees all history as progress, combined with the trajectories of nationalism in Ireland, Scotland and Wales, have all generated unprecedented intellectual activity.Nor has the world stood still: the collapse of communism, the issues of integration into the EU, and the advance of multiculturalism have led more and more people in the English-speaking world as a whole to sense that their collective landscape now looks profoundly different from that inhabited by theirancestors even a few decades ago.

Each chapter describes a major step in the history of life - the breakthroughs that made new forms of life possible Explores the origins of sex, the first multicellular creatures, explains how hard skeletons evolved, why animals moved to land, and how the first forests were born Presents a completely up-to-date picture of the earliest origins of life, exploring new concepts such as the 'RNA world' and the Last Universal Common Ancestor Takes an interdisciplinary view - introducing new ideas from many areas including evolutionary biology, earth history, geochemistry, palaeontology, systematics, and astrobiology Covers life on land, and in the sea and air, and looks at animals and plants from algae and insects to dinosaurs and mammals Includes the latest perspectives on human evolution There are few stories more remarkable than the evolution of life on earth. This Very Short Introduction presents a succinct guide to the key episodes in that story - from the very origins of life four million years ago to the extraordinary diversity of species around the globe today. Beginning with an explanation of the controversies surrounding the birth of life itself, each following chapter tells of a major breakthrough that made new forms of life possible: including sex and multicellularity, hard skeletons, and the move to land. Along the way, we witness the greatest mass extinction, the first forests, the rise of modern ecosystems, and, most recently, conscious humans. Introducing ideas from a range of scientific disciplines, from evolutionary biology and earth history, to geochemistry, palaeontology, and systematics, Michael Benton explains how modern science pieces the evidence in this vast evolutionary puzzle together, to build up an accessible and up-to-date picture of the key developments in the history of life on earth.
China's emergence in the 21st century to the status of great power has significant implications for its relationship with the United States, the sole superpower in the post-Cold War World. Now that China is rising as an economic, political, and military power and has expanded its diplomatic activism beyond Asia into Europe, Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East, its rise has profoundly transformed its relationship with the US and compelled leaders in both countries to redefine their positions toward each other. This book, written by leading scholars and policy analysts from both the US and China, explores the transformation and multifaceted nature of US-China relations, including how the political elite in both countries have defined their strategic objectives in response to China's rise and managed their relations accordingly. It provides an up-to-date analysis on the policy adjustments of the last decade, and covers all the important issue areas such as security, nuclear deterrence, military modernization, energy, trade and economic interaction, and Asia-Pacific power reconfiguration. It does not seek to confirm either an alarmist or optimistic position but presents different views and assessments by foreign policy specialists with the hope that leaders in Washington and Beijing may make positive adjustments in their policies to avoid confrontation and war. It will also be an invaluable resource for students and scholars of US and Chinese politics, international relations and comparative politics.

This book presents statistics regarding procedural actions taken on US district and circuit court nominations for the period January 4, 1977 through 2002. Among other things, the statistics for the 1977-2002 period show: Over the course of five successive presidencies, the senate confirmation percentage for circuit court nominations has declined. The great majority of each President's nominations have either been confirmed or returned. An average of seven nominations per President have been withdrawn. One nomination has been disapproved by a senate vote. The confirmation percentage for district and circuit court nominations combined was greater than 60 per cent for every congressional session from 1977 through 1990, whereas the district and circuit combined confirmation rate has been less than 60 per cent for eight of the last 12 congressional session. The average number of days elapsing between nominations date and final action has been higher for most Congresses in the post-1990 period than for prior Congresses.Starting with the 100th Congress (1987-1988), and in five of the seven Congresses since, an average of more than 100 days has elapsed between nomination dates and committee votes on either district or circuit court nominations, or on both. For almost every Congress in the post-1990 period, the percentages of district and circuit court nominations left pending at the end of the congress were higher than corresponding percentages for the pre-1990 Congresses. The Senate returned substantially more nominations during the 102nd, 106th, and 107th Congresses than during any other Congresses in the 1977-2002 period. The average number of days between nomination date and final action increased in Congresses ending in presidential election years. The vast majority of judicial nominations submitted during the 1977-2002 period received committee hearings and votes, as well as full Senate votes. However, during the 102nd, 106th, and 107th Congresses, there were reductions in the share of nominations receiving committ

This volume explores for the first time how the Australian experience both relates and contributes to political thought...
Sixty years ago, China was one of the poorest countries in the world, populated mostly by rural peasants, and still suffering from more than a century of internal turmoil and international humiliation. Today, China is a rapidly modernizing economic dynamo with growing global influence. Politics in China is an authoritative introduction to how this transformation occurred, and how China is governed today. Written by an international team of highly-regarded China scholars, each chapter offers an accessible overview of a key topic in Chinese politics. The opening section provides readers with a firm grounding in China's modern political history, from the fall of the last imperial dynasty through era of communist rule under Mao Zedong, Deng Xiaoping, and their successors. The next section covers the political system, with chapters on Communist Party ideology, the structure of the political system, and the policies behind the country's spectacular economic performance. The book then focuses on several major issues in China today: politics in the countryside and the cities; the arts; the environment; public health; and population policy. The final chapters cover politics in four important areas located on China's geographic periphery: Tibet, Xinjiang, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. Comprehensive and fully up to date in its coverage, Politics in China is essential not only for students studying contemporary China, but for any reader interested in learning how this rising power has evolved in recent times and the workings of its current political system.
Ileus is a general functional inhibition of the propulsive bowel activity in the absence of mechanical bowel obstruction. Postoperative ileus (POI) is a more specific condition which is a transient cessation of coordinated bowel motility after surgery, preventing effective transit of intestinal content. Depending on the type of surgery, and especially when the bowels are involved in the surgery, the incidence can be high, affecting 4 to 20 percent of abdominal surgery patients. Typically, in the small intestine, it can last up to 24 hours; in the stomach, between 24 and 48 hours; and in the colon, between 48 and 120 hours. During this time, the patient is prohibited from eating and drinking, often requiring nasogastric suction and parenteral feeds until passage is restored. Until then, the patient cannot be discharged from the hospital. POI is the most common reason for delays in discharge after abdominal surgery and can greatly increase the cost of healthcare. It is estimated that the healthcare costs as a result of complications of postoperative ileus may be as high as one billion dollars per year.Though there is some available literature on POI, there is a dearth in new, up-to-date information on the latest management trends and emerging pharmacological therapies.Accelerating recovery of gastrointestinal function improves clinical outcomes, enhances patient comfort, and has a positive economical effect in that it shortens the length of hospital stay and reduces hospital cost. Treatment options include pharmacological as well as non-pharmacological approaches, specifically epidural anesthesia and traditional, non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory drugs, as well as other opioid sparing analgesics. Part of the new Oxford American Pocket Notes series, this very concise guide presents a brief overview of the diagnosis, prevention, and management of postoperative ileus. A valuable resource in the hospital setting for surgeons, anesthesiologists, gastroenterologists, OB/GYNs, pharmacists, physician assistants, nurse pract

It gives a lucid and careful account of the central controversies and sites of disagreement in political theory over the last thirty years and rather than sacrifice theoretical sophistication and nuance for the sake of clarity and accessibility, it admirably achieves both' - Catriona McKinnon, University of York This comprehensive textbook provides a complete and accessible introduction to the main theorists and issues in contemporary political theory today. The text is organized into two major parts. The first, Contemporary Liberal Theory, outlines four distinct liberal theories of justice to introduce the work of Rawls, Nozick, Gauthier and Dworkin. The second, Alternative Traditions, introduces the theorists and themes associated with four key areas of contemporary debate: communitarianism, multiculturalism, deliberative democracy and feminism. By giving students questions for consideration and using applied examples throughout, the text illustrates the practical relevance of contemporary theoretical debates to everyday issues in policy and politics. The result is an essential overview of all the main traditions, issues and positions in political theory today that will serve as an invaluable resource for all students of contemporary political theory, political ideas and political philosophy. Colin Farrelly is Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Waterloo, Canada. Introduction to Contemporary Political Theory will complement Contemporary Political Theory: A Reader edited by Colin Farrelly and also published by SAGE Publications.

Polymorphism - the multiplicity of structures or forms - is a term that is used in many disciplines. In chemistry it refers to the existence of more than one crystal structure for a particular chemical substance. The properties of a substance are determined by its composition and by its structure. In the last two decades, there has been a sharp rise in the interest in polymorphic systems, as an intrinsically interesting phenomenon and as an increasingly important component in the development and marketing of a variety of materials based on organic molecules (e.g. pharmaceuticals, dyes and pigments, explosives, etc.). This book summarizes and brings up to date the current knowledge and understanding of polymorphism of molecular crystals, and concentrates it in one comprehensive source. The book will be an invaluable reference for students, researchers, and professionals in the field.

In the years that followed one astronomer after another looked at the red planet and gradually a mythology was formed - a mythology of alien intellect. By the 1890's the martial influence had spilled over into all walks of life and sparked philosophical debates and wondrous fictions. Scientists, fantasists and people of all creeds looked up and wondered - is there life out there? Now, more than a century later, nations around the world are bombarding Mars with an unprecedented fleet of exploratory vehicles. Their journey taking less time than it took Amundsen and Shackleton to reach the poles of Earth, these small but hardy robotic emissaries are thrusting their way through the depths of interplanetary space to take up residence in the barren Martian deserts. Their goal is to answer one of the oldest questions in mankind's history. Is there life out there? In this sequel to the best-selling first volume, the reader is brought up to date with the most recent results from our nearest neighbour.Filled with a wealth of facts about the latest fleet of Martian explorers as well as a look at what may be coming next in mankind's most ambitious quest for knowledge. This Routledge Linguistics Classic includes a new foreword and substantial new chapter, bringing this seminal text up to date. In Verbal Hygiene, Deborah Cameron takes a serious look at popular attitudes towards language and examines the practices by which people attempt to regulate its use. Instead of dismissing the practice of 'verbal hygiene', as a misguided and pernicious exercise, she argues that popular discourse about language values; good and bad, right and wrong, serves an important function for those engaged in it. A series of case-studies deal with specific examples of verbal hygiene: the regulation of 'style' by editors, the teaching of English grammar in schools, the movements for and against so-called 'politically-correct' language and the advice given to women on how they can speak more effectively. In this revised edition, Cameron considers how the issues covered in the case studies have developed over time and provides new instances of verbal hygiene, which have emerged in the last 15 years , from conflicts and debates on the verbal representation of terrorism since 2001 to moral panics about immigration and ethnic diversity which are expressed in terms of language. Addressed to linguists, professional language-users of all kinds, and to anyone interested in language and culture, Verbal Hygiene calls for legitimate concerns about language and value to be discussed, by experts and lay-speakers alike, in a rational and critical spirit.
