In her Introduction to The Eighteenth-Century Commonwealthman, Caroline Robbins wrote that the Commonwealthmen were "a gifted and active minority of the population of the British Isles, who kept alive, during an age of extraordinary complacency and legislative inactivity, a demand for increased liberty of conscience.". Their essays, arguments, pamphlets, and histories -- a continual flow from the late seventeenth century to the end of the eighteenth -- were hugely popular in America. The themes presented were revolutionary: separation of powers, natural rights, rotation in office, religious freedom, a supreme court, and resistance to tyranny. They achieved very little political success, but the documents of later generations are full of ideas kept alive by the Commonwealthmen in difficult times. Griottes (female bards) are a striking feature of Mandinka culture. They can be recognized by their flamboyant style of dressing and their sharp voices. Nevertheless, griottes have largely been neglected in scientific literature, while ample attention has been paid to griots (male bards). This book tries to fill the gap. Marloes Janson lived with the griottes from a Mandinka community in eastern Gambia for more than a year and was trained by them as an apprentice. From this perspective she describes the daily life and concerns of the griottes, their skills, their techniques for learning the profession, their means of subsistence, their relationships with the griots and their patrons.The main activity of griottes is daaniroo. When they set out for daaniroo, they praise their patrons, and in return they are rewarded with money or goods. This book shows that daaniroo is a highly controversial practice. It is sometimes considered a new development, while at the same time it fits in with the bardic tradition. Some patrons disapprove of daaniroo, yet they are dependent on it to have their prestige confirmed. Several Koranic scholars regard daaniroo as conflicting with Islam, while the griottes do their best to embed their activities in an Islamic discourse. By studying the gendered practice of daaniroo, the dynamics of female 'griotism' are demonstrated. His impact on architecture was paralleled by a revolution in landscape design as Vanbrugh shifted the place of the architect from the house to the grounds. He used the ancient rules of proportion combined with an empathetic approach to Nature to create innovative layouts that were geometric, but bore no relation to the formal gardens of the seventeenth century. In Sir John Vanbrugh and the Vitruvian Landscape Caroline Dalton seeks to explain Vanbrugh's distinctive style of landscape architecture. The natural and moral philosophy of Marcus Vitruvius Pollio (Vitruvius), Euclid, Plato and Epicurus is traced through the Arabic scientists of the Middle Ages into the Italian Renaissance.The book examines the impact of science and humanism on the landscape ethos of Leon Battista Alberti in the Quattrocento and of Andrea Palladio a century later, and looks for parallels with the early Enlightenment in England from 1660 onwards.
